Our group of four tried to
sample as many items as possible. All were
exquisite - none even faintly disappointed.
Both couples at our table have been regulars
of the Charleston Area restaurant scene for
some time. We've dined at five star
restaurants in the Charleston area - and
nothing in which we indulged at Old Village
Post House fell short. From the "he" crab
soup to the home-made peanut butter pie.
While we were pleasantly surprised by the
tasty offerings, we were startled in a very
good way by the prices. I dare say the
entrée's were about 2 to 6 dollars lower
than what we've found in Charleston for
similar items. For example, a very tender and
flavorful New York strip accented with bleu
cheese, mashed potatoes, shaved onion rings
and demi glaze for $17.95. Shrimp and Grits
for $14.50. Pesto glazed tuna for $16.50. And
most entree's are accompanied by a vegetable
and a starch as opposed to being ala cart
which make the price differential even
greater. The presentation may have been less
foo-fooey than it's counterparts, it was
still very nice. All comparisons aside, it
was a wonderful experience all around in its
own right.
Everything from the mixed
greens to the salmon was all very fresh. We
were pleased to hear the waiter tell us that
their freezer is only big enough to hold the
ice cream…meaning that none of there
food is frozen. My friends grouper and my
salmon were both absolutely
delectable…both the essence of the fish
itself and the sauces. We didn't stop raving
the entire time. Having been disappointed by
more than one $25 entrée, we approached
celebration…we were so gratified by our
experience.
The restaurant was very
busy…and the staff didn't miss a
beat…in spite of my dinner companion's
incessant comments and questions. Bernie was
an excellent host…as was Tracy. She was
kind enough to take us on a tour of the
on-site Inn's six rooms in between my shrimp
bisque and mixed green salad. They've
restored the entire property and it's
incredibly charming with new fixtures of
traditional design. The rooms in the
restaurant and the inn are very warm and
inviting.
So, if you want the
five-star taste and selection without the
price tag…make the trip over to the old
village in Mount Pleasant…101 Pitt
Street.
