North Charleston and Hanahan The famed Noisette project is history. Charleston County Schools are some of the worst and urban sprawl is prevalent. The future is promising as North Charleston completes its transition. A new mixed-use development is completed with the Tanger Outlet and more hotels moving in the area near the Coliseum and Montague Ave that is sure to change the landscape, to say nothing of the tax base. It will be interesting to see how North Charleston leaders take advantage of the outlet center with the associated tax revenue to correct some of the shortcomings inherited from the Navy Base days, during which time North Charleston also became home to the “Industrial Part of Town” Complete with the obligatory pawn shops and strip clubs. The Charleston area’s most complete and popular shopping area resides in N. Charleston with Northwoods Mall and Tanger Outlet. In the same vicinity you’ll find Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, Rooms to Go, etc. etc. etc. More retail revenue is generated by the corridor surrounding Northwoods Mall than any other area in the state.

There are nice communities in what you might call North – North Charleston, but you still have to contend with the schools. If you don’t have school age children and don’t plan to, there are several communities near the Mall out to Goose Creek where you can find some bargains. Also, keep in mind that there are some homes with North Charleston Mailing addresses that are actually in Dorchester County.
