Lower King: The Antiques & Art District

South of Market Street, Lower King is where the past lingers in every storefront and on every wrought-iron balcony. This section of King Street is known for its antique shops, art galleries, and historic buildings. It’s a paradise for collectors and those with a love for classical design. Walking this stretch feels like moving through a living museum—rich with period furniture, rare books, and Southern fine art. Landmarks such as Charleston Place and the Charleston Library Society anchor the district, while nearby historic homes and churches provide a backdrop of grandeur. Lower King is also where the Charleston Antiques Show draws crowds from across the country each spring.

From rare 18th-century furniture and maritime maps to Southern portraiture and Civil War-era relics, the offerings here are not just beautiful—they're storied. This stretch is a playground for collectors, decorators, and history lovers who appreciate craftsmanship and character. Whether you're browsing the meticulously curated showrooms of George C. Birlant & Co., Charleston’s oldest antiques dealer, or discovering contemporary Southern artists at a local gallery, there’s a sense of quiet sophistication in every doorway.
